The Case for a Fixed Bed

A fixed bed is exactly what it sounds like: a permanent sleeping platform, usually built at the rear of the van.

The Catch: It permanently eats up a significant portion of your van’s available space.

Ultimate Convenience: You never have to “make” the bed when you are exhausted after a long day of hiking or driving.

The “Garage”: A raised fixed bed creates a massive storage area underneath, perfect for mountain bikes, inflatable kayaks, or large water tanks.

Comfort: You can use a proper, thick memory foam mattress rather than relying on segmented upholstery cushions.

The Case for a Convertible Bed (Rock and Roll / U-Shape Lounge)

Convertible layouts usually feature a seating area and table during the day that drops down to form a bed at night.

  • Maximum Living Space: This layout makes a smaller van feel much larger and more open during the day.
  • Entertaining: If you want to have friends over for dinner or card games, you have a proper lounge area.
  • Remote Work: It provides a dedicated table and upright seating for working on a laptop.
  • The Catch: Playing “bed tetris” every single night and morning can become tedious, and you lose out on bulk storage space.

The Verdict

If you are planning to live in the van full-time or carry lots of outdoor gear, a fixed bed is usually the winner. If you are building a weekend warrior vehicle or working with a compact van, a convertible bed maximises your limited space.
